Who We Are

Who are the Sydney Convicts?

The Sydney Convicts are Australia’s first gay Rugby Union club. Founded in 2004, the Convicts are a group committed to building a competitive, social and diverse club which welcomes players from all levels of playing experience.

The Convicts, under the umbrella of Woollahra Colleagues RFC, compete in the Sydney Suburban Rugby Union championship. Two teams are currently active:

  • Convicts I, playing in the 2012 Nicholson Cup
  • Convicts II, playing in the 2012 Halligan Cup

Who Plays for The Convicts?

The Club welcome players of all levels from the seasoned campaigner to those new to the sport.

The current team draws together a diverse mix of players all committed to Rugby. Whilst most players identify as being gay there are a number of players who identify as being straight. The team’s attitude is that they are a Rugby club that happens to be predominantly gay as opposed to a Gay Rugby Club.
